Most importantly this will be a time to hang out with mates… and maybe make a couple of new ones.

History

The idea of Mate’s Day was floated on social media back in 2021, then in 2022 and 2023, we held hang-out events on the beach for all to come and celebrate Mate’s Day together. In 2023 the idea was also adopted by ‘Australian Men’s Health Forum’ and has spread to the wider men’s health community.

Spending time with mates

Research shows that “spending time with mates boosts our mental health and wellbeing, increases our sense of support and resilience, and can help us cope more readily with life’s sometimes stressful demands” (www.enmasse.com.au)

“Just as we rely on our mates when we are stuck out on the tracks, we need mates to help us through the tough times in life” (Wayne Krueger)

Mate’s Day was adopted in 2023 by Australian Men’s Health Forum and helped to provide a platform for an online forum for discussing many projects across Australia that promote mateship. Check out their article.
